A city tour on your own
.We invite you to take an impressive walk through the historic old town of the former free imperial city. Discover historic buildings and cultural treasures that tell you the history of the city. Have fun!
1) The market square: The heart of the historic half-timbered town and starting point of the city tour. Also worth seeing here is the new Fool's Fountain, which was inaugurated in mid-June 2013.2) The town hall: Built in 1524, the building with its high pointed gable facing the market square embodies the town and imperial history of Pfullendorf. The historic town hall with its unique cycle of glass paintings by the artist Christoph Stymmer is outstanding.3) The parish church of St. James: "A baroque sky of stucco and color". This intoxicating image presents itself to visitors to the church, which was completed in 1480/81 as a Gothic pillar basilica. The rosebud-shaped pyramid on the church tower is unique in the history of art. The interior was baroqueized in 1750. Today, the parish church is a popular stop on the Way of St. James.
4) The Steinscheuer: former granary of the Heilig-Geist-Spital Pfullendorf, built entirely of stone in 1515. It got its name because it was one of the few buildings in the old town center that was built entirely of stone. The Gothic stepped gable is impressive. The hospital's coat of arms is still visible on the gable today. Today, it is home to the municipal library.5) The Old House: This is one of the oldest residential buildings in southern Germany. It was built in 1317 as a small aristocratic residential tower and converted into a half-timbered house at the beginning of the 15th century. It is one of the town's special sights. The size, appearance and crippled hipped roof are impressive. The historic town wall can still be seen at the rear of the old house. Today you will find the museum of the town's history here.6) The "Alter Löwen" gallery: Formerly also known as the "Gremlichhaus", as its first known residents were the Lords of Gremlich. Later, the "Zum Löwen" brewery was run here, hence its current name. After renovation work, this building housed the science department of the old grammar school. Today it is the municipal gallery with a permanent exhibition by Sigurd Lange and changing special exhibitions.7) The Upper Gate: the town's landmark and probably the most beautiful double gate complex in the Lake Constance region with a 38-metre-high observation tower. It is the only surviving town gate in Pfullendorf. There used to be prison cells at the top of the tower.8) The Bindhaus: The half-timbered house dating from 1499 originally served as a hospital cooperage and is now home to the museum of local history and crafts.
9) The town lake with its romantic island and silver-colored fountain invites you to linger on the benches after an exciting tour.
