Natura Trails: Im Mittleren Jagsttal in Hohenlohe

The Natura Trail is a wonderful circular hike of 8.5 kilometers length. You hike along the Jagst, up the Goldberg and over the Meßbachtal valley. Meßbachtal valley.

The start and finish of the signposted route is the parking lot at the campsite in Krautheim-Altkrautheim. The starting point in Altkrautheim is easy to reach with the Regiobus line 19.

The mostly unpaved path leads along one of the most natural watercourses in Baden-Württemberg. Right at the beginning, you pass recently created still waters, which, thanks to their connection to the Jagst, their calm water and their aquatic plants, are an ideal nursery for fish and will hardly differ from a natural oxbow lake over the years. This is followed by stretches of water with gravel islands, flooding aquatic vegetation and banks with steep drop-offs, into the walls of which the kingfisher likes to dig its breeding cave, which can be up to 80 cm deep.

With a bit of luck, you can observe the kingfisher here in its bright, iridescent colors. In summer, the banks are teeming with dragonflies. These are mainly inhabitants of slow-flowing rivers and streams, where their larvae also develop. The Jagst, which is accompanied by a narrow strip of alluvial forest consisting of various willow species and ash trees, runs quietly here in small loops.
