Donau-Radweg

The Danube Cycle Path leads through a largely untouched natural landscape and accompanies the "young Danube" between Donaueschingen and Ulm on almost gradient-free paths that run away from road traffic.

Those who know the Danube as a wide river will be surprised: In Baden-Württemberg, it is a tranquil and clear river in which you can enjoy a refreshing dip during a cycle tour. It carries its water in narrow loops through the Upper Danube Nature Park, has dug a deep bed into rugged rocky walls, while castles high above watch over the valley.

The path is mostly flat and cyclists could make rapid progress - if it weren't for the beautiful diversions along the way. Here a pretty meadow by the water invites you to have a picnic, there a beer garden to take a break. And depending on the weather and the day's destination, you can spend a lot of time sightseeing, as you pass monasteries, pretty half-timbered towns, baroque churches and the castle of the Princes of Hohenzollern, which towers over Sigmaringen and offers kitchen and costume tours.

After spectacular twists and turns through the rocky valley, the landscape gradually widens out. During a break in the beer town of Ehingen, which is still home to five traditional breweries, cyclists can decide whether to follow the main route, which takes them to Wiblingen Abbey, among other places, or take the route via Blaubeuren and marvel at the Blautopf - a spring that glows in shades of blue and attracts visitors like divers. In any case, the final and highlight of this tour is in Ulm, where you can climb the highest church tower in the world and stroll through the fishermen's quarter with its many half-timbered houses, bridges and pubs.
