Description by the author

Mysterious Black Forest and historic monasteries, dark green valleys and walls and towers dating back 1000 years: All of this can be seen and experienced on the Monastery Route through the northern Black Forest.

The four most beautiful monasteries of the Middle Ages - Maulbronn, Hirsau, Wildberg and Alpirsbach - are the way stations along the route, which is over 100 km long.
The first stage of the Monastery Route starts at the best-preserved medieval Cistercian monastery north of the Alps: Mulbronn Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the seclusion of the Salzach Valley, the monks left behind the abbey, which is now around 860 years old, in a fertile landscape with fish ponds and vineyards. Maulbronn is also a lively town - for example, when the monastery courtyard is filled with cheerful people at the Christmas market. The next stage leads to the Hirsau Monastery. The extensive ruins of the more than 1000-year-old Benedictine monastery bear witness to its former importance. But the timbered town of Calw offers more than just monastery history - for example, one of Germany's most famous writers. "Calw is the most beautiful town of all", Hermann Hesse once wrote about his hometown. After exploring Calw, the tour continues to Wildberg to the 800-year-old Maria Reuthin Dominican Convent. The view of the castle complex and the half-timbered house facades is unique. The Home Museum provides information about the history of the monastery as well as textile production and rural crafts.

The last stage finally leads to Alpirsbach with its monumental Romanesque church. Alpirsbach Monastery has dominated the picturesque Kinzig Valley for nine centuries - and at the same time, the buildings made from the red sandstone of the northern Black Forest blend harmoniously into the landscape. The spirit of the Benedictines has been preserved here to this day. The Museum of the Monastery contains extraordinary rarities, such as a pair of trousers from the time of Martin Luther. The monastery town of Alpirsbach also invites you to enjoy an eventful stay, during which a visit to the Brewery Museum or the Show Confectionery should not be missed.
