The varied hike leads from the center of the municipality of Hohentengen through the vines of Germany's southernmost vineyard, the Engelhof. From there, you have a beautiful view over the Rhine to the medieval town of Kaiserstuhl. A private deer enclosure provides information about these animals. The tour leads back via the ruins of Weißwasserstelz (with possibility to stop for refreshments) along the banks of the Rhine to Schloss Rötteln (private property) and on to the Hohentengener campsite with swimming pool. After a short climb, we are back at the starting point in the center of the village in just a few minutes. An all-terrain baby carriage or a carrier for the children is helpful, as the path along the Rhine is very narrow in places.
The hike begins at the signpost location Rathaus in the direction of the Weißwasserstelz ruins. Always follow the yellow diamond sign via Kirchstraße and Hansengelstraße. As soon as the tarred part of the road ends, we turn right along a beautiful meadow path to the fallow deer enclosure and continue to the gate of the vineyard, where there are also various information boards about the animals. See also the yellow diamond and the "Public path" sign. After the gate, the trail leads through the vineyard slope of the "Ölberg" (closed during the grape harvest) with a beautiful view of the Engelhof vineyard and across meadows to the Weilergraben. We bypass this to the left to the country road, which we cross. Now turn right and walk a few meters on the footpath and cycle path along the country road over the bridge. Then follow the well-marked yellow rhombus through the houses of the tiny district of Guggenmühle to the Weißwasserstelz ruins. (refreshments available). The ruins are located above the signpost and can be reached in just a few steps. From there, we walk towards Hohentengen over the small bridge that crosses the Weilergraben stream. We are now in one of the most beautiful places on the High Rhine, which is also used as a natural sunbathing and swimming area in the summer months. We walk along the banks of the Rhine to the sewage treatment plant. We bypass this, as well as the adjacent park of Rötteln Castle, which is privately owned. Shortly before the castle, the path becomes wildly romantic and after a few steps we are at the Rhine bridge with an impressive view of Rötteln Castle and the medieval town of Kaiserstuhl. From Rötteln Castle, the trail continues along the banks of the Rhine to the Hohentengen swimming pool and campsite. (Refreshments available during the bathing season) From there, we follow the little road up to the town center where you can end the hike in the local restaurant.
