The Elster Cycle Path leads from its source in Asch (Czech Republic) to its confluence with the Saale.
Description
In the lower reaches, the cycle route runs close to the river through the diverse Elster floodplain.
This section (130 km), from Wünschendorf to the confluence with the Saale near Halle, is particularly family-friendly. It is almost entirely asphalted and has low inclines. Due to the narrow river valleys, the upper reaches cannot always follow the river closely. Not all sections of the route are asphalted yet, and some altitude must be overcome due to the existing topography, making this section somewhat challenging. The beautiful landscape, interesting Elster viaducts, and towns like Bad Elster, Plauen, and Greiz make up for the effort. Intensive work is being done on expanding the Elster Cycle Path in the lower reaches, resulting in significant improvements in recent years.
