You can follow in the footsteps of the first Christian missionaries in the Middle Ages on the long-distance Monks' Trail. The route, which is almost 1,000 km long, leads from the Hanseatic city of Bremen to Puttgarden on the island of Fehmarn and continues by ferry to Denmark to Roskilde. In Germany, the trail leads through the diverse landscape of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Numerous monasteries and old churches, magnificent castles and typical manor houses await visitors along the way.
From the starting point in Bremen, the Lower Saxony section of the route leads190 km through the land between the Elbe and Weser rivers to many historic sites, through a landscape of marshlandlandscape of marshlands, wet meadows and ridges of geest to Northern Europe's largests largest fruit-growing area, the Alte Land on the Elbe. From the Elbe dyke, the view goes far to the big ships from all over the world. After crossing the Elbe on the Wischhafen-Glückstadt ferry, the Mönchsweg continues for 340 km in Schleswig-Holstein. From Glückstadt on the Elbe, the route passes through the towns of Itzehoe, Bad Bramstedt, Bad Segeberg, Plön, Eutin, Neustadt, Oldenburg i.H. and Heiligenhafen i.H. to Puttgarden on the sunny island of Fehmarn. If you want to cycle further, take the ferry to Rødby in Denmark and follow the Monks' Way (Munkevejen) to Roskilde.
