The Ochsenweg begins in Wedel and splits into an eastern and western route in Uetersen. The eastern route takes you through moorland and woodland via the spa town of Bad Bramstedt to Nortorf. The western route explores the expanse of the Seestermüher Marsch, passing Elmshorn, Itzehoe along the forest and Stör to Hohenweststedt. Shortly before Rendsburg, the two routes meet again. From there, the route leads via Schleswig to Flensburg. Under the name "Haerveien" the route continues in Denmark to Viborg.
The approximately 230 km long Ox Trail ('Hærvejen') was the central land route between Denmark and northern Germany in the 19th century. It served farmers as a droving path for cattle, but was also used by knights, soldiers, merchants, pilgrims and beggars as a direct route to the south. Today, cyclists on the tour along the historic land route get an insight into the nature and cultural history of northern Germany and Denmark. Away from noisy traffic routes, the route leads through wide moorlands and marshlands, through forests and typical northern German meadow and heath landscapes, past lakes and along rivers. Along the way, you will pass through attractive cities such as Neumünster or Rendsburg and get to know numerous villages and communities along the way.
