Past the "Hockstein", a rock formation, or the "Bärenhöhle", a cave-like passage in the rock, the Markersdorf nature trail leads to Amselgrund. On the way back, you can admire the bizarre course of the Chemnitz river in Schweizerthal with its whirlpools.
The landscape of the Chemnitz valley is characterized by mixed forests rich in deciduous trees with exposed cordierite gneiss blocks. Along the trail, signs and information boards introduce you to many of the 48 native and exotic tree species.
Various nesting boxes help you get to know the birdlife with its 58 breeding bird species, including the rare oriole and the native sparrowhawk. If you're lucky, you might even spot rare animal species such as the nocturnal dormouse.
