Hiking, marveling, breathing deeply
Into nature with childrenThe Mühlberg circular trail between Möhringen and Wurmlingen is a very special family tour. It may sound a little inconspicuous, but it is far from it. At 11 kilometers long, it is a bit of a challenge for children, but there is a lot to discover along the way.
The medieval town center of Möhringen with its idyllic townscape and historic facades as well as the stream running through the middle of the town is a varied starting point for the tour. Along the way, the fallow deer enclosure is of course a particular attraction, especially for children. Here you can take your first extensive break at the barbecue and playground and not only observe the shy animals on the pasture, but also unpack your well-earned snack.
The next part of the route is more for stories and history: on the one hand, there is a millstone on the Mühlberg, which refers to the history of a mill here in the border area of various former dominions. There is also a lot to tell about the Konzenberg lordship at the Konzenberg ruins. On the way there, you follow the old border path between Baden and Württemberg. It's hard to imagine that this was still a national border until 70 years ago.
Medieval ruins and castles such as the Konzenberg ruins are absolutely fascinating for children of all ages, especially as the remains of a mighty 13-metre-high "keep", a tower, and the remains of a surrounding wall are still preserved here: plenty of space and starting points for fascinating knight and princess stories.
A little more than halfway through, the route descends into the idyllic Krähenbachtal valley and from there back to Möhringen. Did you know that Vienna is actually on the Krähenbach in summer and not on the Danube? This is because as the Danube continues to sink into the Danube between Immendingen and Möhringen, the Krähenbach, which rises near Tuningen and flows past Talheim and Esslingen to Möhringen, is the first tributary to bring water back into the Danube. The Bavarians and Austrians just don't know it yet! Not without good reason, the Krähenbachtal valley was only recently declared a nature reserve. The town of Tuttlingen and its district of Möhringen are working on upgrading the path through the "Bächetal" for those seeking recreation. Plaques with "Hänsele sayings" are not only funny, but also refer to the special history of the traditional carnival in Möhringen. Another special feature is the "Möhringer Staubecken" on the Krähenbach, a considerable reservoir in the middle of the valley. So many impressions on a single family hike: there are not only tired and satisfied children afterwards, but certainly also a lot to talk about and process.
