Description by the author

The "Diemelradweg" long-distance cycle route, which has been certified with 5 stars by the ADFC, runs for approx. 30 km between Liebenau and Bad Karlshafen through the Reinhardswald Nature Park. This is the final stage of the 110 km long-distance cycle route, which starts in Willingen and leads via Diemelstadt and Warburg into the Reinhardswald Nature Park.
On this beautiful route in the Reinhardswald Nature Park, the path is flat and even and always runs alongside the Diemel. The natural river winds its way through the landscape and is characterized by numerous nature reserves and flora and fauna habitats on the slopes of the Diemel. Here you come to a region that is the only one in northern Germany to bear the European "Prime Butterfly Area" award. Here, on the calcareous grasslands of the Diemel Valley, numerous butterfly species have found a habitat. These include very rare species that are dependent on the special vegetation. Juniper heaths and colorful orchids are also native here. The regional "Diemel Dry Gin" is produced from the juniper berries. The distillery is located in Liebenau-Haueda in an old church.
After the town of Trendelburg, the mostly open area with views of the limestone grasslands on the slopes is increasingly replaced by deciduous forest. From here, the Diemel valley slowly meets the foothills of the Reinhardswald forest. Along the way, you will also pass other highlights such as Trendelburg Castle with its Rapunzel Tower, Wülmersen moated castle and the Carlsbahn tunnel (open from April to October). In the winter months, the trail leads past the tunnel, which is then used by bats as a refuge.
Once you arrive in Bad Karlshafen - the white baroque town - the new harbor basin, the Weser Therme and the German Huguenot Museum await your visit. This is also where the Diemel meets the Weser. You can continue your cycle tour from here on the Weser Cycle Path in a northerly or southerly direction (in a southerly direction, continue through the nature park to Hann. Münden, where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet).
