Description by the author

Around the source of the Kinzig, hikers will find a piece of the Rhön in the Spessart: mountain ranges with open views contrast with the densely forested mountains typical of the Spessart. You can see as far as the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön. The wealth of views is what makes this 13.6 km long Spessart trail around the basin formed by the Kinzig and its first tributaries so special.

The circular tour starts with a few small jags through the so-called "Bergwinkel" - which is known for its quiet forest and open field paths. Hiking along the soft grass paths on the "Firstäcker" slope, a beautiful view opens up - the view sweeps into the distance with pleasure. Scenic passages with ponds and wayside crucifixes invite you to pause and dream. After passing the Wolfswäldchen forest, the hiker heads towards the Weiperzberg nature reserve. The shell limestone hilltops with nutrient-poor grassland and wooded upper slopes characterize the landscape and are home to rare animal and plant species - a rich variety of vegetation. While remarkable orchids can be admired at any time of day, the common noctule, a bat, can only be seen at dusk. At the foot of the Weiperzberg, you can take a break at the developed rest area. On the panoramic ridge passage south-east of Weiperz, hikers will discover boundary stones marked by the weather - a piece of history along the way. The source of the Kinzig is located south of Sterbfritz. As the bubbling source of fertile land, it meanders through the Kinzig valley. Following the Kinzigstraße, the hiker moves away from the village. The ridge passage takes its course to the east of Sterbfritz between the two non-forested elevations "Roter Baum" and "Sterbfritzer Höhe". The view sweeps eastwards over the inviting Sinntal valley before passing the Stephanskuppe nature reserve, which is characterized by orchid-rich dry and semi-dry grasslands of the shell limestone - a remarkable, colourful variety of flowers. North of the Stephanskuppe, hikers can catch a glimpse of the Wasserkuppe - a foretaste of the Rhön, the landscape of which is already revealed on this extra tour. The last section of this Spessart trail offers a view of the idyllic Ramholztal valley.
