Tour of Romanesque Marienborn-Walbeck

Short description

The Romanesque Tour leads to cultural sites along the Romanesque Road in Saxony-Anhalt, which is part of the European cultural route TRANSROMANICA.

Highlights: At Marienborn, you can see the Border Museum from the bridge over the A2. From here, the path starts along the former border strip, the Green Belt, with beautiful views of the former potash mines in Morsleben and Beendorf. Exiting the forest near Walbeck, you will see the collegiate church of St. Mary (around 942) overlooking the village. Inside the village church lies the tombstone of Count Lothar II, while the cemetery holds the grave of Ulrich Mühe.

Description

From the train station, we head to the village of Marienborn, take the first right, then go up left and follow the path to Rodenberg. Turn left into the forest, then onto a road where you continue to the bridge over the A2. Walk to the B2, turn right, and reach the border path heading north. Follow this path until it sharply turns left, then walk 200m to the right and look down towards Beendorf. Turn left onto a forest path, continue straight until you see Walbeck with Stiftsberg ahead. You can reach the collegiate church through the village or, at the beginning of the village, turn right into Dammstraße after 200m, keep right, and follow a meadow path over the Aller river, slightly to the left uphill. The imposing ruin of the church still stands as a testament to the monastery. The place offers a beautiful panoramic view over the valley and the surroundings of Walbeck.

The village church with the tombstone is easy to find, but advance registration is recommended. To reach the Barriere guesthouse, take the road to Hödingen.
