Short description

Along the cycle path between Zeitz and Hohenmölsen, you will experience the industrial history of the region.

Description

Coal is by far the largest fossil fuel on Earth. It has evolved over many millions of years from plants that were subjected to high pressures and temperatures in deep layers of the earth. This process is called coalification and occurs in several stages. First peat is formed, then lignite, then hard coal, and finally anthracite.
The lignite mining areas in the southeast of the Burgenland district belong to the Zeitz-Weißenfelser lignite mining region. This area is characterized by the long tradition of mining, which began here over 300 years ago. After the coal was initially mined underground through underground tunnels, open-cast mining followed from the 1970s onwards.

Around the turn of the century, mining with landscape-shaping large deep mining pits and open-cast mines became a dominant economic sector for the region. In parallel, a broad industry of coal processing and refining developed, from briquette factories to coking plants to coal liquefaction plants. Each of the technical epochs of the lignite industry leaves its distinctive marks.

The landscape between Zeitz, Teuchern, Hohenmölsen, and the border with Saxony is shaped by mining with its diverse effects in the form of open-cast mining fields, spoil heaps, residual pits, spoil tips, deep mining areas, and the remnants of industrial facilities.

Embark on a search for traces in an area that has changed and developed like few others in recent decades. Discover the relics of the industrialization of Central Germany and actively experience the mining history of the recarbo EXPERIENCE REGION!
