Description by the author

Over 300 lakes, small canals, streams and, of course, the namesakes Oder and Spree offer a variety of opportunities to be on the water. The bike tour follows the river Spree from Fürstenwalde to Beeskow and passes various locks.

Length: 35.8 km
Start: Fürstenwalde (Spree) train station
Finish: Beeskow train station
Via: Berkenbrück, Neubrück, Raßmannsdorf, Radinkendorf
Arrival: RE 1 to Fürstenwalde (Spree)
Departure: RB 36 from Beeskow

Course:
The first lock is already at the beginning of the tour in Fürstenwalde. At the instigation of Elector Johann Georg, the Fürstenwalde mill dam, which was first mentioned in 1298, became a barrage lock in 1588. This was used to allow shipping traffic to the "Frankfurter Niederlage" at Lake Kersdorf. The new weir was put into operation in 1996 and has three weir fields with 2 protection panels each, which are automatically driven depending on the water level.
After a section through the forest, the Spree is crossed on an impressive bridge and the next lock is reached. The Kersdorf lock was put into operation in 1981 as a single-chamber lock with a usable length of 55 meters. Through an extensive repair starting in 2009, the north chamber was extended and expanded for commercial shipping as well as recreational boats.
The next lock is located slightly off the route in Neubrück and connects the Oder-Spree Canal with the Spree via Lake Wergen. At the same time as the new lock was built in 1892, the pumping station was constructed right next to it. The Neuhaus lock is operated on site by the lock staff.
The tour ends in Beeskow, where the last lock for this day is also located. The lock was built in 1973 for the Finow measure and is now mainly used for water tourism purposes. It connects Lake Schwielow, the largest lake in Brandenburg in terms of area, with the Oder-Spree Canal.
Once you arrive at your destination, it is worth taking a detour to Beeskow Castle. The viewing platform offers an impressive view of the town and the surrounding area, and the old walls house a café-restaurant and various exhibitions on historical themes.
