Border conditions of this kind were exploited by robbers, poachers and smugglers. Robber chief Karasek, for example, had his quarters in the Kreibich tavern. He and his gang committed burglaries in the Bohemian-Saxon border region and repeatedly went into hiding in the enclave. In 1800 he was put out of business when he even broke into Oberleutersdorf. When Saxony joined the customs union in 1834, the enclave border became a guarded external customs border. For Niederleutersdorf, this meant cumbersome goods traffic and higher prices. The inhabitants suffered greatly as a result. The time of the Pascher was booming. In 1835, the local gang of smugglers around Pascherfriedel was caught in the Höllengrund in the Neugersdorf forest. Three men were shot dead in the process.
