A tour that offers the taste of the Havelland region: running through meadows, fields and pine forests, it passes manor houses and palaces of far-reaching cultural significance such as Schloss Nennhausen, which was much admired by Fontane. Alternatively, the tour can end in Rathenow – a centre of the optics industry.
The tour starts with Paulinenaue and Senzke, where the former manor owner was described by Fontane as “sharp, dashing, yet burlesque”. The manor house and park are still partly open to the public today. The bicycle tour leads to Stechow through a landscape criss-crossed by canals. Here, nearby Lake Ferchesaer See is a perfect spot to cool down on hot days. Those who wish to shorten the tour can opt for the detour to Rathenow from Stechow and visit the regional centre of the optics industry or take the train from here. The main route continues from Stechow to Nennhausen. Fontane was a fond observer of the palace of the same name, with its residents Caroline von Briest and Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué: allusions to the two of them are to be found in his novel character Effi Briest. Schloss Nennhausen is a prominent example of the rich cultural life in Mark Brandenburg during that period.
