Description by the author

The Wilderness Trail provides an insight into the Lieberose wilderness area which is being developed by the nature foundation Stiftung Naturlandschaften Brandenburg. This walk along lakes and moors and through extensive forest is truly delightful. On the Wilderness Trail you can see the primaeval forests of the future emerging before your very eyes.Length: 8 kilometres (about 3 hours)Start/finish: Bergsee visitor's car park on the L44 between Buse and LamsfeldLogo/route sign: middle spotted woodpeckerDirections:Train: Take the RE2 (Cottbus) from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) to Lübben. From here, take bus 508 (Straupitz) to Butzen and then walk about another one kilometre to the start of the tour at Lake Rammoltsee near Bützen (approximately 2 hours)Car: From Berlin, take the A13, B115 and L44 to the start of the tour at Lake Rammoltsee near Bützen (approximately 1.5 hours).Route description: The Wilderness Trail is a section of the Ludwig Leichhardt Trail. This eight-kilometre stretch also passes through the area around the lakes Ziestesee and Ugringsee, and there is a potential shortcut along the old Cottbus road. There are still landscape forms here that were produced by the Ice Age such as meltwater lakes and glacial troughs. In addition to pine forests, there are also islands of deciduous trees that provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. Bird species such as the black and middle spotted woodpecker, sea eagle, peregrine falcon, crane, kingfisher, coot, swan, teal, goldeneye and many other songbirds are at home here. The area is also home to moor frogs, water snakes, various species of butterflies, insects, wild boars, red deer and roe deer. There is even a wolf pack that lives on Lieberoser Heide. But it is not just the fauna that exhibits such great biodiversity here. There are also many different species of flora, too. Endangered species such as the sundew grow on the moors of Lieberrose as do wild rosemary, water violet and various grasses. In addition to pine trees, all kinds of deciduous trees thrive such as copper beech, oak, mountain ash, birch, robinia and the bird cherry from North America. When you walk the Wilderness Trail you may not see everything, but you will certainly gain a good overall impression of what an unspoilt natural wilderness is like.Trail conditions/surface: This site is a former military training area. Please stay on the signposted paths, which are guaranteed to be free of ammunition. Outside of these designated routes there might be hazards to life and health, particularly from ammunition or ammunition parts. For the unpaved and sandy paths, we recommend sturdy footwear. Particularly on hot days we recommend you take sun protection with you and plenty to drink.Maps/Literature:An overview leaflet on the Wilderness Trail is available on the Stiftung Naturlandschaften Brandenburg website:: www.stiftung-nlb.de/de/wildnis/wildnis-erleben.htmlExplore the Jüterbog, Heidehof and Lieberose development areas with guided tours and themed events.
