Ecumenical Pilgrimage

The Ecumenical Pilgrimage Route leads through Central Germany over a varied 450 km route. If you start the journey in Görlitz, the entire route on foot takes about three weeks. Todays route follows the path of the historic trade route Via Regia - the Royal Road.Over approximately 60 km, the route passes through Saale-Unstrut. Coming from Leipzig, you will reach Merseburg. Here, on the Saale River, you will find the oldest church in the city, St. Thomae Neumarkt Church, which now serves as a hostel for pilgrims. You can also admire the Merseburg Cathedral and Castle Ensemble from the Saale River.Through meadows and fields, passing by the Großkaynaer Lake, you will arrive in Freyburg on the Unstrut. Before that, you will pass through the Alte Göhle, an old forested area. In the picturesque wine town of Freyburg, you will find a cozy hostel if needed. From here, you will follow the Unstrut River to Großjena.You will pass by the Stone Picture Book and eventually reach the Blütengrund, where you will cross over by ferry to reach Naumburg. Here, too, you will find good accommodation options. From here, you will continue along the Saale River, passing through the nature reserve Göttersitz, through the Finne, until you reach Eckartsberga. From the tower of Eckartsburg, you can enjoy a magnificent view all the way to the Thuringian Basin. Then, you will continue towards Erfurt.
