Fontane would never have believed that a pig could run faster than a race horse. It was in Senzke that he heard about this story – and the strikingly sophisticated, eccentric country life of the Bredows. A day tour to country residences that passes through forests and former marshland scenery. There is a railway station in Friesack that enables this tour to be shortened if necessary.
The tour starts in Paulinenaue, a village that is situated on the main FONTANE.RAD route. First of all you head for Potsdam, before turning off in Senzke for Wagenitz. Fontane described the lord of the manor in Senzke as a dashing yet burlesque figure who had his Chinese pig race against a horse belonging to the neighbouring manor owner. The estate and park are still impressive today. The von Bredows' residence once stood in Wagenitz, but it burned down in 1945. In Haage, the circuit tour branches off to Görne: there has been a Fontane bust in front of the manor house here for several years now. At the next stop in Kleßen is a Baroque manor house that is undergoing a genuine renaissance: this is a remarkable example of time-honoured, newly revived Brandenburg rural culture – with holiday apartments and a garden café set amid a unique, wild English-style garden. In Friesack, you can either go directly to the railway station three kilometres outside the town or return via Haage to the main route heading for Paulinenaue.
