The Löwenburg was reportedly built by the Counts of Dassel as a hunting lodge. Around 1250, it is mentioned in a change of ownership to the Welfs and serves as the administrative seat of the office of Lauenburg of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1399 to 1530.
