Salt Lake Hiking Trail (former Bartelszeche and Reihersee)

The Salzgitter Höhenzug has a special relevance for mining history. However, there is nothing left to see from the former mines and quarries nowadays. Nevertheless, the interventions in nature from back then have left some traces that are still to be discovered today. On circular hiking trail No. 17, the area of the former Bartelszeche and the former clarification pond (now Reihersee) are such traces that shape the area. The Reihersee offers a good place for special plants with its unique water composition. Hiking trail No. 17 is initially easy to walk on a wide forest path. The ascent to the ridge path, however, is very muddy and challenging after heavy rains. Also, the descent later from Reihersee back to the forest path was not quite easy in summer 2021 due to tree felling activities. For those who are interested, before the descent, a short detour to the shore of Reihersee is possible.
