The Picknicker - Cycling route through the nature of Harsewinkel and Versmold

Start your picnic tour in the heart of the city of Versmold. From here, head straight to the bird sanctuary Versmolder Bruch. The viewing platform is an ideal picnic spot for the first break. Enjoy the pristine natural area with its wet meadows, alder marsh forests, and the floodplain landscape between the Aabach, Neuer, and Alter Hessel rivers. Due to extensive farming practices with low livestock density, gentle fertilization, and a late cutting time, a particularly species-rich community is preserved here. Even today, hedges and field copses provide a structured landscape. In Greffen, the barbecue area on Warendorfer Landweg is a perfect spot to take a break with a picnic.

Then the path leads you along the gurgling Ems for about 10 km before you reach the Boomberge nature reserve. This significant inland dune area in the Gütersloh district is the highest point of Harsewinkel at about 79 m - so no reason for dizziness. The next picnic station is not far away: The monastery ensemble in Marienfeld with the abbey church, the monastery shop, the garden, the monastery café, and the monastery gate offers something for all the senses.

Drive through Marienfeld along the Lutter, where you can admire the Auenland Alpacas. You will then reach the Hühnermoor. The oldest nature reserve in the district, dating back 4,000 years, preserves a unique flora and fauna. A visit is particularly worthwhile in spring during the cotton grass bloom. South of the nature reserve, you can catch a glimpse of the renatured Lutter. Just behind the Hühnermoor, you will reach the Marienfeld local history museum with its café in the chicken coop. Well-established cycling routes lead you through the beautiful Harsewinkel city center, to the Versmolder Bruch, and finally back to the center of Versmold.
