The Senne is a very special landscape. On sands that are 200,000 years old, a diverse cultural landscape was created through historical heath farming, the remains of which can still be found today on the military training area and in some protected areas.
The conditions for settlement and cultivation were poor. The extremely dry and nutrient-poor sands did not yield a good harvest. For many centuries, the Senne was therefore a forgotten landscape, a "desert" in the middle of Europe. It is precisely these naturally nutrient-poor soils that are the reason for the high nature conservation value of this landscape today: Many specialized plants and animals that have become rare nationwide can be found here.
