Directly at the Emsquellen between Hövelhof and Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock at the foot of the historically significant Teutoburg Forest, the route begins, initially winding through the Paderborn region and the Gütersloh district. Historical towns such as Rietberg and Wiedenbrück with unique half-timbered houses accompany your tour. The state garden shows in the two towns, now serving as nature and recreational parks, enrich the landscape experience on the banks of the Ems. At the same time, nature reserves such as the "Seinhorster Becken" provide a unique habitat for many water birds through the damming of the Ems.
The Marienfeld monastery near Harsewinkel is a suitable stopover. The next stage of the Ems Cycle Path takes you to Münster.
With a length of just under 375 km, the Ems is the shortest river in Germany. The river originates in the Senne between Hövelhof and Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and flows into the North Sea near Emden.
