Höxter | Corveyer Testimonies

In 822, the monastery of Corvey was founded in the immediate vicinity of Höxter. Emperor Louis the Pious gifted the imperial abbey the place and its surroundings. The inhabitants of Höxter, who were dependent on Corvey, also benefited from the monastery's founding and its patron saint Vitus: with support from Corvey, Höxter became a market town and a city, the residents received their own rights and were able to build a Weser bridge and a city wall.

In the pursuit of greater independence, the relationship with the city lord drastically deteriorated in the 13th century. The people of Höxter destroyed the town of Corvey founded by the abbot near the monastery and the regional Brunsburg. Given the weakness of the abbey, they were able to achieve substantial autonomy in the 14th century. It was only in 1674 that the city had to submit fully to the abbot again. The rule of Corvey ended in 1803 with the dissolution of the ecclesiastical principality.

Numerous places, buildings, and signs in Höxter bear witness to the presence of the monastery of Corvey for nearly a thousand years.
