LEISURELY CYCLING ON THE PANORAMIC CYCLE TRAIL BALKANTRASSE
From Wuppertal-Oberbarmen through the hilly landscape of the Bergisches Land to the Rhine lowlands
Balkantrasse – the name is reminiscent of the Balkan Express. This was the popular name for the former railway line between Leverkusen-Opladen and Remscheid-Lennep. Today, a cycle path runs along this route. Ideal for leisurely cycling with views from lofty heights.
Cosy old town in Remscheid-Lennep
The starting point for the Bergisch tour is Wuppertal Oberbarmen. From there the route runs via Remscheid-Lüttringhausen to Remscheid-Lennep. It’s worth taking a stroll through the alleyways of the historic town centre with its almost circular medieval layout and listed buildings. Or following in the footsteps of the great inventor of the x-ray at the German Röntgen Museum.
Relaxed route
The former railway line takes you through the countryside without any big inclines. There are alternating scenes of urban life and rural idyll. In Wermelskirchen, the route runs along quiet roads straight through the centre of the town.
As you cycle along the 51 kilometre route, imposing milestones serve as reminders of the railway’s past. Converted old station buildings, such as the Burscheid station, are a nice place to take a break.
Perfect for families: A stop-off at the KlimaErlebnisPark NaturGut Ophoven with its lovingly laid out flower and vegetable beds, various forest and meadow areas with information boards and plenty of opportunities to touch, feel and discover. The BioBistro in the farm house is a good place to enjoy a break.
