From the hiking car park at Aueler Hof, we first cross Wahlscheider Straße towards the east, and follow Steinweg. After a few junctions, following the signs, we leave Wahlscheid through the forest on a good path towards Neuhonrath. There we cross the Agger, passing by Naafshäuschen with its beer garden, until we reach Honrather Bahnhof (which is also a good starting point for train travelers).
We continue uphill, along the increasingly steep road (we may have to push a short distance, about 400 meters). On the left, we see the Protestant church and Burg Honrath. The origins of the castle date back to the 12th century – only the cellars remain from that time. The remaining part of the castle and the Romanesque church tower date back to the 16th century. By the way, the church is a small acoustic marvel, which is often used for CD or radio recordings. Several classical concerts are performed here throughout the year, which are worth attending.
We continue uphill, a stretch along "Rösrather Straße" (about 100 meters), then turn right into "Honrather Straße", which continues – almost at the top – as "Hoffnungsthaler Straße". This road, which is not yet fully developed, ends at "Schlehecker Straße" (L84). Here we drive 50 meters to the left, and then turn right towards Wickuhl. Now we are finally at the top. Between Schlehecken and Wickuhl, we are rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view over the Rhine plain to the Eifel. We then continue downhill. Behind Wickuhl, we come to Kreisstraße 49 towards Rösrath. We cross it by turning right for 50 meters, then left towards Dachskuhl. Passing by the farm shop "Schiefelbusch" with its new café and various farm animals, we first ride flat and then steeply downhill in sharp curves to the valley floor. Here, we turn right behind the fish ponds into Gammersbacher Tal. We ride through the forest, shady and cool on a quite bumpy path, cross Kreisstraße K39, and reach Gammersbacher Mühle with a functioning mill wheel and rest areas. The path that follows is only passable after a long period of dry weather! Otherwise, the rule is: gather momentum and go for it! When we reach "Hippenalm", we have made it.
Following the signs through the industrial estate, the next greeting is from Burg Sülz, a former farmhouse and one of the oldest, historically mentioned settlement sites in Lohmar (water castle 11th century), now used as an industrial area. Those interested in antiques or wanting to eat Italian should make a detour to the courtyard. Otherwise, we cross Sülztalstraße (L 288) and continue on the well-developed cycle path along the Sülz (lots of traffic!) until Heppenberg. At the end of Aggerbrücke, we turn right, pass under the road, and follow the Agger into Donrath. We turn left into Dornheckenweg, just before a sharp right turn, we turn left into the forest. After a wooden bridge over the Agger, we turn right through a tall forest towards Reelsiefen. At the end of the road, we cross the road to the right and turn left into the access road to the campsite. Through woodland and meadow areas, we pass by Hitzhof and Brückerhof until we reach the beautiful Aggerschlösschen, which invites you to stop for a meal with its idyllic beer garden under old trees. We cross a wooden bridge over the Agger and turn left into the landscape garden "Aggerbogen". Here you will find various information boards and some exhibits about insects, bees, the Benjes hedge, and the ecosystem. After safely passing under B484, we reach our starting point at Aueler Hof again.
