The first shaft of Niederberg was sunk in 1912 between the formerly independent communities of Vluyn and Neukirchen. Mining was carried out with a total of five shafts from 1917 until the closure of the mine in 2001. The underground connections stretched from Kamp-Lintfort to Tönisberg. Niederberg was one of the most successful mines in the Ruhr area, producing very high-quality fat coal that was also exported abroad.
The establishment of the mining settlements "Alte Kolonie" (1917-1925) and "Neue Kolonie" (1926-1930) resulted from the influx of many miners who found a new home in Neukirchen-Vluyn alongside their work. The different types of houses are now under monument protection and, along with the old winding towers on the former mining site, are the last witnesses of the declining coal mining industry.
The Old Shaft Niederberg 4 - Tönisberg is still preserved.
