Red cabbage meets hard coal
Small forests and hedges, meadows and orchards accompany our hike, then imposing heaps form the backdrop for vast red cabbage fields. In Noppenberg, we smile at a curious founding of a cycling club and admire the high wheel monument, where mining machine parts have been used. Upstream, a self-built mining landscape made of gabions and a mine cart adorn a front yard, which has found a new purpose as a flower box. Cultural history oldies also send their regards: Ottenfeld Castle, peeking out from its avenue, dates back to the 15th century. The mills tell a story here as well, not just mining, with four along our route alone. In addition to other mill ponds on the Broichbach that still exist today, the reservoir in Herzogenrath also traces back to a mill that existed in the Middle Ages. The building of the Alsdorf oil mill still stands today.
