The hike is almost 20 km long and although it is quite long, it is not very steep. It leads from the fortress and research city of Jülich through Kirchberg and along the river Inde to the train station in Weisweiler. On the section around the Inden open-pit mine, we accompany the renatured Inde through a natural river landscape where numerous plants and animals have found a habitat. Viewpoints offer a glimpse into the still active Inden open-pit mine.
Jülich is worth a visit on its own, to explore the fortress, Renaissance, and present-day research city. Duke Wilhelm, who lived around 400 years ago, is responsible for the construction of the citadel with the palace and the layout of the city center that are still preserved today. The French and Prussians also left their architectural traces, but the layout of the city center has remained unchanged to this day and represents an ideal Renaissance city layout from the 16th century. As a research city, Jülich has made a name for itself far beyond its borders in today's times, and the research center is one of the leading institutions in Germany. In its institutes and competence centers, scientists investigate complex topics such as fuel cell development, biotechnology, structural change, and quantum technology.
