The Sheepfold Loop

Total length: 21 km
Route: Amelinghausen - Rehlingen - Tellmer - Betzendorf - Amelinghausen

Highlights: historic sheepfold Betzendorf, historic sheepfold Amelinghausen, Betzendorfer Berg, fieldstone church Betzendorf, Lopausee

The tour starts at the tourist information center in Amelinghausen, where you can get all the information and tips for the upcoming bike tour. Leaving Amelinghausen via the Hessenweg, you head straight towards Rehlingen. While driving through the village, you cross the small stream Lopau, and the road continues straight through the forest to the small settlement of Diersbüttel. After two kilometers on the county road, you take the field path "Alter Mühlenweg" to Tellmer.

On the bike path to Betzendorf, on the right side, you will find the historic sheepfold, which is now used as an event location. While circling the over 1000-year-old Betzendorf, the St. Peter and Paul Church, one of the oldest churches in the Lüneburg Heath, with its massive round tower from 1190, is particularly worth seeing. The area west of Betzendorf is the highest in the district of Lüneburg. From the Betzendorfer Berg, you have an excellent view of the surroundings, the large forest areas of Süsing, and on a clear day, even as far as the church towers of Lüneburg and the Elbe riverbank on the horizon.

Passing hidden blueberry plantations at the edge of the forest, you reach the historic sheepfold in Amelinghausen. The over 200-year-old building and the entire area with a bonfire site have provided a special ambiance for celebrations and events of all kinds for many decades.
Then, the Lopausee is in front of you, dammed up from the small stream near Rehlingen. Through the underpass, you have the opportunity to visit the Heidschnuckenstall in the Kronsbergheide, which is still used today by the shepherd and his flock during cold winter months and during lambing season in spring. Passing by Lopaupark, the Sheepfold Loop is complete with the entrance back to Amelinghausen.
