Since 1954, oil extraction has been one of the most important German production sites in the Hankensbüttel area. In the years around 1970, Hankensbüttel was the third strongest field in oil extraction in Germany. Today, hardly anyone knows that there was once the most productive drilling site in Germany in the Hankensbüttel-South area. At the southwestern entrance of Hankensbüttel stands an old deep pump drive, which is intended to refer to this mining tradition in the Hankensbüttel area.
