Almost always at a right angle to it, you are on the "Bridge Cycle Path," which connects Osnabrück and Bremen on two parallel routes. Between the two Hanseatic cities are three natural parks with primeval moors and forests, numerous historical sites with fascinating history, and of course several bridges. Some are historically interesting, others architecturally appealing. But only the Ocean Bridge just outside Bremen leads to America.
You could easily end up like the Bremen Town Musicians, who never reached the Weser. Because already at the starting point of the Bridge Cycle Path in Osnabrück, there is so much to see that you could almost forget to start cycling. The Town Hall of the Westphalian Peace on the historic marketplace, for example, the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center, and the Museum for the painter Felix Nussbaum designed by star architect Daniel Libeskind. Not to mention the Museum am Schölerberg, which offers an exciting view of the first stages of your journey - and therefore is worth the little detour.
The exhibition vividly shows how the landscapes of the region were created over the course of 300 million years of Earth's history. Hard to believe that tropical oceans and ice age glaciers played a role. In the Dümmer and Wildeshauser Geest natural parks, you can also get background information on the landscape experience in exhibitions. This way, you can enjoy the tour from the northwesternmost mountain range in Germany passing by the Dümmer Lake and over the ice age Geest ridges around Wildeshausen to the typical North German marshland just before Bremen even more intensively. A must-visit for historically interested visitors is the site of the Varus Battle. In the further course of the route, it's not always about world history, but you can experience everyday life of past eras up close at the Linnenschmidt Water Mill and the Iron Age House in Venne.
You will learn that in Twistringen, once the heart of the straw processing industry beat. Bestsellers were drinking straws and hats - the world's largest "circular saw" hat with a diameter of five and a half meters reminds of this. On the other hand, you can see what happened to those who made money dishonestly at the former arsenal of the citadel of Vechta: The prison museum shows the 900-year history of imprisonment. Although not all the way to the land of the free, but only to the Amerika district of Harpstedt, the Ocean Bridge just outside Bremen leads. Still an impressive structure, as it offers the only way to cross the marshy Delmetal on dry land. From a safe height, it provides exciting insights into the wetland habitat. From the swamp to the pavement of the Bremen Old Town - if the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster knew what they missed out on here: The bronze sculpture of the Town Musicians stands right next to the famous Bremen Town Hall. Enjoy the diverse range of Bremen's gastronomy. Well-fortified, you can then ride back to Osnabrück via the second route.
