Gnarrenburg emerged as part of the peat colonization and owes its present economic importance significantly to peat colonization and the associated establishment of peat works, brickworks, and glassworks.
You can learn a lot about the Gnarrenburg glass industry at the "Glasmuseum Gnarrenburg". Insights into the life of a typical peat farmer family are provided by the Historical Moorhof in Augustendorf. More information about the formation of the moors, their animal and plant life, peat extraction, and the use of peat is offered by the Moorerlebnispfad in the Huvenhoopsmoor nature reserve.
