A wandering dune in the middle of the forest? How can that be? On the family-friendly Wandering Dune Trail at Stixe, you can get to the bottom of this question. The dune landscape of the Elbe Valley is geologically very young. The Urstromtal of the Elbe River was formed from the glaciers of the last ice age 12,000 years ago. It left behind extensive sand and gravel fields in northern Germany. The result was a storm-formed dune landscape, which is now mostly covered by extensive pine forests. In Stixe, the sand reaches up to the tops of the pines. Along the way is also the Laaver Moor, a diverse, small-scale peat bog. Peat bogs are unique landscape elements characterized by an almost always present water surplus and are therefore also called rainwater bogs. It consists of shallow hollows that have been blown out by the wind to an impermeable layer. Be surprised by bogs and dunes in the middle of the forest!
