The Mittelland Canal runs through the Southern Heath Gifhorn. Along the canal runs a cycle path on both sides.
The Mittelland Canal connects the Dortmund-Ems Canal with the Elbe-Havel Canal north of Magdeburg and, at 325.7 km, is the longest artificial waterway in Germany.
