The Elbe Lateral Canal runs through the Gifhorn South Heath. Along the canal runs a two-sided cycle path.
The Elbe Lateral Canal branches off between Braunschweig and Wolfsburg near the village of Edesbüttel from the summit level of the Mittelland Canal, continues in a northerly direction through the district of Gifhorn. Via the Aller Valley through the Lüneburg Heath and flows into the Elbe at Artlenburg.
