The center of the 10 km long EifelSpur "Heideheimat" hike is the Steinfeld Monastery and the heath landscape around Krekel and Sistig in the municipality of Kall. Here you wander through the Nordeifel and explore the Kuttenbachtal nature reserve on your own.
The starting point of the circular hiking trail is the idyllic Steinfeld Monastery in Urft-Steinfeld. Enter through the wide open wrought iron gate of the monastery gate. A visit to the monastery is a must. The monastery basilica, one of the most important medieval monuments in the Rhineland, was built in the 12th century as one of the earliest German vaulted churches. The monastery itself dates back to the 10th century. The late Gothic vault paintings by the painter Hubert von Aachen and a rich baroque interior have been preserved. The King's Organ from 1727 and the mortal remains of Saint Herman Joseph are world famous. It is one of the best-preserved monastic monuments in the Rhineland. In the monastery, you will feel the deceleration. The beautiful, centuries-old garden includes a labyrinth and is a place for reflection and relaxation. Here you can unwind and forget about the hectic everyday life.
On the way from the monastery to the heath, you cross the Kuttenbachtal nature reserve. To do this, follow winding paths towards Kuttenbach to the Sistig-Krekeler Heide. Enjoy the fabulous nature. You are in a natural paradise here that is unparalleled nationwide. Rare plants, fragrant forest meadows, and untouched nature await you. The greenish wood hyacinth, the wild geranium, spotted orchid, and the green lizard orchid are some of the rare plants that grow and thrive on the Krekeler Heath. The Sistig-Krekeler Heath is a paradise for plants and animals. Here you discover the full diversity of nature: Wood sorrel, ragged robin, and rattle compete for the favor of bees, butterflies, and bumblebees fluttering and buzzing through the air. You stroll past colorful meadows, species-rich bristle grass swards with arnica and small fen meadows, above which the cotton grass tufts of the slender-leaved cotton grass sway to and fro. In late summer, the meadows turn partly blue when the gentian opens its blue funnel-shaped flowers.
Especially in spring, the Krekeler Heath with its richness of flora and fauna is worth a visit. On the way back, you pass the Kuttenbach to Diefenbach, where you follow the path back to the Steinfeld Monastery.
