Description by the author

On the 313 km-long Eifelsteig, hikers can enjoy an intensive experience of the Eifel uplands in all their facets. Taking “Just you, the rocks and the water” as its slogan, the 15 daily stages between Aachen-Kornleimünster in North Rhine-Westphalia and Trier in Rhineland Palatinate offer a wide-ranging tour of discovery through the unique Eifel scenery: moors and heathland on the Hohes Venn, or high fen, the rocky Rur valley with its reservoirs, and the Eifel National Park, the Chalk Eifel, the cones and maars of the Volcanic Eifel, the Lieser and Kyll rivers and the red sandstone rocks to the north of Trier.

Grandiose views, broad stream valleys, challenging ascents - that’s the joy of nature, and the joy of hiking, in its pure form.

The seasons repeatedly change the appearance of the route. In the spring, the Eifel awakens with colourful meadows and blooming hedges, followed by the bright yellow broom flowers, or “Eifel gold”. During the summer, dark green stream valleys offer welcome refreshment when the sun brings a hot Mediterranean climate to the rough rock faces. From September, the large oak forests turn into colourful paint pots full of radiant autumn shades. The cool and clear air during the winter shows the Eifel in its natural, honest state.
It takes 15 to 16 days to walk the Eifelsteig trail from beginning to end. However, the route can also be divided into several sections, allowing everyone to hike it at their own pace. Step for step, you can leave everyday stress and hectic city life behind you.

Eifel Tourismus GmbH and several other hiking tour operators offer a “Hiking without baggage on the Eifelsteig” package. This means that hikers only need to take their day rucksack with them, while their baggage is transported to the next hotel. This allows you to enjoy the hikes baggage-free.
