On par with nature
Not far from the city gates, there is an idyllic river landscape that you can discover from a different perspective. Exploring the diverse banks of the Spree and Müggelspree with all their flora and fauna from the water offers you a great natural experience and true relaxation.
The RE1 will take you to Fürstenwalde on the Spree in under an hour, where our two late riser tour tips begin.
Tip 1: Drift with the current on the Müggelspree.
Our first tour option takes you to the idyllic Müggelspree. The not too long paddling tour with a gentle current and idyllic bathing and rest stops is also suitable for beginners and families. More than two-thirds of the route pass without any motorboat traffic, offering you the ultimate nature experience. Despite its proximity to the capital, the Müggelspree is a beautiful, winding small river. A canoe trip can hardly be more beautiful.
At the beginning, you glide over a canalized section of the Spree and pass wild overgrown old branches of the river. At the Große Tränke, the Müggelspree branches off at a lock. The river, now renaturalized in many areas, winds through a diverse forest and meadow landscape in wide meanders. Idyllic pure, perfect for unwinding! You also have plenty of time for picnics and swimming breaks. Just pull your boat to the shore and jump into the clear Spree water! You continue through the curves with noticeable current. The meanders make the route interesting and varied. Herons, swans, and ducks are your constant companions. Even the beaver is visibly at work here. Only shortly before reaching your destination in Hangelsberg do you finally return to civilization.
Tip 2: To the wreck of the "Hedwig" on the Spree in Fürstenwalde
Our second tour option takes you to the wreck of the "Hedwig." This lost place is a real hidden gem. It is unlikely that you will encounter other visitors here. Once the about 120-year-old tugboat pulled large barges across the water. Today it lies still and hidden in a secluded side arm of the Spree. Motorboats are denied access, but with your canoe, you can explore the intriguing wreck in peace.
Your tour starts at the boat rental in Fürstenwalde directly on the Spree. You head upstream towards Kersdorf, passing the mixed feed plant and the last houses of Fürstenwalde. The Spree is usually not very busy, a push convoy might glide past you slowly. A first stop is offered at the Berkenbrück waterway rest area. Here, paddlers who are completing the longer Märkische Umfahrt often stop. The small beach with a jetty is perfect for swimming, and you can relax on the terrace of the Strandidyll excursion restaurant.
The next exciting section: Past the Streitberg waterway rest area, you have to find the well-hidden entrance to a narrow waterway. Only behind it, in a former arm of the Spree embedded in an extensive pasture, you will find the final resting place of the Hedwig. It is said that the last owner died in the engine room here in the 1960s. And when a weir blocked the Spree arm, the now ownerless ship was left to its final fate. Take your time to explore the wreck and enjoy the peace and tranquility in nature. Finally, you head downstream back to Fürstenwalde. A visit to the city center at the cathedral or one of the surrounding restaurants and cafes is worthwhile to end your day in a relaxed manner.
