The painter and sculptor Otto Freundlich formulated the idea of a "Sculpture Road" from Paris to Moscow in 1928 in Paris. The capital of art and the capital of the revolution were to be connected. In the 70s, the sculptor Leo Kornbrust revived the idea. In St. Wendel/Saar, he began the first section with over 50 sculptures today.
The special feature in Salzgitter-Bad: The sculptures lean on the history of the city through their material "steel" as an indication of the connection between the city and its surroundings, art and internationality, intercultural understanding and human interaction. The history and significance of the steel city Salzgitter is made present. A European idea with European artists becomes a new landmark of the city.
In Lower Saxony, there are currently four sections of the Sculpture Trail: in Salzgitter, Lamspringe, Braunschweig and Liebenburg.
