Hiking trail: The Kerkstieg - Comeback of an almost forgotten path (6.5 km)

Experience on the HikeThe Kerkstieg promises a lot of nature above all. Enjoy the peace and freshness of the forest and the beautiful Weseler Heide with its wide views. In Hanstedt, you can shop in the cozy village and enjoy restaurants and cafes, while in Wesel, a short detour to the Witch's House is worth it.

DirectionsThe approximately 6.5 km long tour leads through hilly Hanstedt forests and parts of the Weseler Heide. Over the entire distance, there are about 80 meters of altitude to overcome. The route is well signposted with boulders at the edge of the path, marked with the inscription "Kerkstieg" and small directional arrows. At some points, there are also wooden signposts. Halfway there is a covered hiking hut. Those who wish can sign the hut book provided.

Tip from the Heath ExpertWe recommend sturdy closed-toe shoes for the Kerkstieg. The tour is especially suitable in warm summer weather, as it mostly leads through the Hanstedt forests and woods. For the section in the Weseler Heide, a hat and drinks are very good companions in hot temperatures.

The Kerkstieg (Kerk=Church / Stieg= Path over hills) was long forgotten. Chronicles record that the church communities of Undeloh and Hanstedt were once merged. This meant that the Wesel residents had to walk to Hanstedt's St. Jakobi Church for worship. The small Kerkstieg fell into oblivion with the emergence of bicycles, as it is not suitable for two-wheelers. However, after the Kerkstieg reappeared in a local history book, the path made a comeback.

Nature of the Hiking TrailThe route consists partly of narrow paths winding through pines and beeches, sometimes on wider paved paths. Watch out for roots. In the Weseler Heide, sandy paths are mainly found.

ParkingThere is no dedicated hiking parking lot here. You can park on the roadside at the starting and end points mentioned above.

During the week, you can take the bus back to Hanstedt: From the Wesel stop, Am Höllenhoff to Hanstedt, Kirche. Especially on weekends, a taxi service is recommended.
