The southern lowland is of great importance for species protection. It is a habitat for many endangered animals such as the stork, the crane, and the snipe. Preserving natural habitats sustainably secures the future of storks. In Preten, the "The Stork Foundation" purchased around 600 hectares of farmland along the Sude. Today, Heck cattle ("Aurochs") and Koniks ("wild horses") live freely and wildly and spend the whole year on pasture there. The herds are important for a diverse plant and animal world, provided that only few animals are kept. Such extensive grazing and use of wet meadows create a mosaic of habitats through which the Sudewiesen-Weg meanders. The Krainke, a 35 km long tributary of the Sude, also belongs to this. In 1990, it was designated as a nature reserve, including its approximately 50m wide riparian strip, and offers the stork the best living conditions. At the Stork Center "Storkenkate Preten," you can learn a lot of interesting facts about it.
