Friedensstadt Weißenberg Circular Trail

On a leisurely walk, visitors learn about the eventful history of this religious settlement. The tour leads past 20 information panels explaining the history and development of the respective waypoints.
Friedensstadt Weißenberg was built between 1920 and 1935 by Joseph Weissenberg, the founder of the religious community Johannische Kirche, and his followers. The aim was to build a Christian community that provided housing, work and healthcare in one place. Over a period of 15 years, about 40 buildings were constructed for about 400 residents. In addition to residential buildings, there was also a school, a home for the elderly, a farm, workshops, the healing institute, the church on the Waldfrieden site and other buildings.
After the religious community was banned under the National Socialists, the SS took over the site in 1938 and established a branch of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp there. The Soviet army occupied the site in 1945 and used it as a garrison until 1994. The former military training area used by the Glau garrison is now open to visitors as a nature park centre and wildlife park.
The Johannische Kirche community laid claim to Friedensstadt Weißenberg after the fall of the Wall and it was restored to them in 1994. The traces of 60 years of military use and decay are still clearly visible today, but the settlement is gradually awakening to new life. More than 400 people now live here once again.
