Description by the author

In addition to bricks, limestone was also an important building material demanded by the growing metropolis of Berlin. In Rüdersdorf, 30 kilometers east of the city, miners extracted the coveted raw material, which they also processed into cement from 1885. The museum park is the only historic lime and mining site in the world to have been preserved in this variety. Famous architects such as Karl Friedrich Schinkel drew up plans for the structures.
The 23-kilometer panoramic tour from Strausberg to Erkner takes cyclists along lakes and unique nature to the Rüdersdorf Museum Park and lets them look into the open-cast mine, which is still active today.

Tip: Along the entire route there are countless picnic opportunities at the many lakes.

Length / duration: 23 km / 1.5 h

Start / Finish: Strausberg S-Bahn station

Route: From the "Strausberg" S-Bahn station, first follow the "Tour 5" markings through the Herrensee, Lange-Damm-Wiesen and Barnim-Hänge nature reserves to Lake Stienitz. At the entrance to the nature reserve, a steep staircase forces you to descend. If this is too arduous for you, you can drive around the obstacle along the Hennickendorfer Chaussee. Continuing to follow the markings, you ride along the shore of Lake Stienitz through a shady forest area. Here the route changes and you follow the marking "blue point". The next stage leads along the Mühlenfließ to Rüdersdorf. The museum park along the way invites you to visit its open-air industrial museum. Shortly after the limestone quarry, you leave the original route for a detour to Alt-Rüdersdorf before you meet the "blue dot" marking again at Kalksee. The last stage leads along the Flakensee, through the landscape conservation area "Rüdersdorfer Heide". The remaining two kilometers to the station "Erkner" then lead through the charming small town itself.
