The elongated and rather narrow lake connects the towns of Hohennauen and Ferchesar. In terms of hospitality and scenic attractions, the region has been a popular destination for recreation seekers for over 100 years.
The path leads out of Hohennauen over the canal bridge. Along the south bank of the lake, you can walk closely along the water or follow the road past meadows and fields. Rare botanical species like true angelica and blue bugle grow on the meadows behind the residential area of Lötze. In Semlin, you can walk along the natural riverbank promenade. A detour to the town center is worthwhile because of the picturesque village with the beautiful half-timbered church. Last but not least, the monument for Anna Ropien is remarkable. The people of Semlin commemorate her as a victim of the last witch burning in the area in 1672.
Towards the eastern tip, the lake becomes increasingly narrower, and with a view of the forest panorama on the other side, you will peacefully reach the turning point of the tour. The tranquil Ferchesar is situated slightly higher. After a short climb, you will reach the village green with a well that is at least 600 years old.
Continuing on to the Buntspecht camping park with an inviting sunbathing area and petting zoo. Always with a view of the lake, the path winds its way through shaded pine forest on higher terrain. Passing by the small settlement of Tegeland, you will hike through the Ferchesar forest until the forest clears. The waist-high reeds of the dog meadows stretch almost to the horizon. The protected area is a retreat for rare plants and animals such as the bittern. Their deep booming call can be heard far and wide in spring.
Behind the dike sits the village of Wassersuppe above the low-lying meadows. You can already see it from the narrow pedestrian bridge over the Rhin. Rural idyll awaits you beyond the village with the peculiar name, along the Wallweg lined with gnarled willows, until you reach the starting point again.
TIP: Plan sufficient break times! The many cozy shoreline spots with swimming opportunities are simply too tempting - so don't forget your towel.
