Description by the author

Do you love solitude and little-frequented paths? Do you like to observe nature? Then we have a late riser tour with a S-Bahn connection for you, which you can reach quickly and easily and where you will only meet a few hikers.

Your highlights:
Quiet: relaxed one-way tour through nature, past lakes and into the old town of Strausberg Exciting: birdwatching with great egrets & co. At Herrensee and in the surrounding wetlands Sure: stroll along the promenade at Strausssee, take a swim and enjoy the sunset
Start: Strausberg train station
Destination: S-Bahn Strausberg Stadt
Length: 12 km / approx. 3 - 3.5 hours
Arrival by public transport: S5 or RB26 to S-Bhf. Strausberg
Departure public transport: S5 from Strausberg city

Idyllic Annatal: nature conservation and past mills
Your late riser tour starts at Strausberg train station and you follow the 66-Seen-Weg northwards. After about 15 minutes you go into the forest and along the western edge of the "Herrensee, Lange Dammwiesen and Barnimhang" nature reserve. Endangered species such as otters, fire-bellied toad, crested newt and numerous orchids exist here.

A river, as the small watercourses are called in Brandenburg, meanders through the forest as a quiet stream. Depending on the location, season and rainfall, the Annafließ is sometimes more and sometimes less prominent. You will pass some former mills: the imposing mill wheel greets you at the remains of the hammer mill, the renatured swan pond is dammed up at the former cutting mill. Information boards on a nature trail show you interesting backgrounds.

Eldorado for water birds: the Herrensee
Shortly before the Herrensee you will pass the quiet forest, which is used for forest burials. Wooden benches between large oaks, beeches and pines invite you to pause and watch the flora and fauna carefully. Now accompanied by the Way of St. James, the tour takes you to the Herrensee. The swampy landscape is well worth seeing and is lined with alders and reed belts. The large shallow water areas provide habitat and food for rare water birds such as the great egret. You can also watch gray herons, gray geese, tufted ducks, cormorants and other water birds from the east bank. Sometimes a pair of cranes can be seen stalking in shallow water. You may also see wild boars and deer in the meadows and in the swamp forest. It's best to pack binoculars!

Straussee
When you arrive in Strausberg City, you will notice the clear and calm waters. A visibility depth of up to 7m is possible, and you won't find any annoying motor boats on the Straussee. Only the Ostrich ferry operates. It is Europe's only electrically operated passenger cable ferry. For over 100 years it has been connecting the city center with the forest area “Beyond the Lake”. Treat yourself to a refreshment and swim in the lake or just enjoy the view of the water. Following the idyllic promenade you will pass the historic bathing establishment. The small lido has nostalgic charm. The wooden buildings date from the 1920s and are somehow reminiscent of the baths on the Baltic Sea. Rent a rowing boat and enjoy the view of the beautiful silhouette of Strausberg!

Old town atmosphere and sundowners
Towards the end of the tour you should make a detour to the dreamy Fischerkietz. Traditionally, fishing was part of the livelihood of the neighborhood residents. Today a small viewing platform is idyllically hidden here. Stories convey several information points of the "lake views". The well-preserved city fortifications with city walls, the ramparts or the rest of the Landsberg gate tower are worth a stop. Before you start your way back with the S-Bahn: how about a sundowner with a view over the lake? In the dignified restaurant at the Fischerkiez, in the Amiceria or just like that on the Strausseepromenade you can watch the sun go down and let your tour end in a relaxed manner.
