Round trip around the natural paradise of the Groß Schauener chain of lakes - tour for late riser

From the castle to the nature reserve
After the regional train has brought you to Storkow and the nature park, you can best get an overview at the beginning of your tour. In the historical ambience of Storkow Castle, there is information and stories about the natural and cultural landscape in the visitor center of the nature park, which you will soon cycle through: alluvial forests, wetlands and grassland areas, old pine forests, secluded villages and many lakes.
On the way you may hear the typical call of the bittern from the reeds, call cranes and Nordic geese or see eagles and kites circling. The Groß Schauener Seenkette nature reserve is an important breeding, resting and feeding area for many swamp and water bird species, but also for the rare otters. Partial areas are even wilderness areas of the national natural heritage.
On the way south from Storkow you will pass the unique salt marshes. Salty groundwater comes to the surface and ensures that a characteristic plant cover is formed. Information boards inform you about the geological and botanical features, and the view from the observation tower is definitely worth it - not only for birdwatching.

Enjoy fish sustainably and watch the real hunters
You should definitely make another stop at the Köllnitz fishery. Here you can enjoy fish with a clear conscience. Sustainable fishing is carried out on the Heinz Sielmann Foundation's land on the Groß Schauener Lakes, giving rare species enough space and opportunities to survive. You can try freshly caught fish, e.g. delicious pikeperch, either in the farm shop with a snack or in the Köllnitzer Fischerstuben restaurant. Next door you will find Brandenburg's only fishing museum and an exhibition by the Sielmann Foundation on nature conservation.
Here begins a nature trail to the Selchow observation tower, which provides information about the area and its flora and fauna. Take your bike with you or take a short hike (45 minutes there & back) to get a fantastic view of the lake from the observation tower and watch cranes, cormorants, black kites as well as ospreys and sea eagles hunting.

The Sahara in the middle of Brandenburg
The tour takes you past lakes with hidden natural swimming areas to Bugk. The area directly to the east of the village is exceptional. The Bugker Sahara is a nutrient-poor and dry sand area, which extends to the Great Wucksee. You have a wide view over the sandy areas and unspoilt pine trees. Between the individual pines you will discover silver grass, moss and lichen that give the forest a fairytale look. Information boards tell the details about this special living space.
Rare animal and plant species can also be found on the inland dune Waltersberge in Storkow, where the tour will eventually bring you back. An adventure trail provides information on the almost 70m high dune, which was created by winds after the last ice age. Unique in Germany. The view from the very top to Storkower See is worth the effort for your ascent. Do you find the voracious ant lion, the larva of the ant maiden, which lurks for prey in self-made sand funnels?
After the trip into the desert, treat yourself to a homemade lemonade made from elderberry, lemon and soda in the nearby restaurant on the vineyard. If that's not enough: You can also cool off in the Storkow lido with a panoramic view of Lake Storkow.
