Art and nature around Heimbach
In the surroundings of Heimbach, an unusual art project of the Nordeifel Nature Park in cooperation with the International Art Academy Heimbach has emerged: In June 2015, six esteemed artists from the region created artworks for two weeks. Under the theme "Man and Nature" and the curious eyes of art enthusiasts, they created seven sculptures, plastic works, and installations that can now be seen permanently in the place of their creation, in nature.
The starting point of the 45-minute, 2 km long circular route is the tranquil Heimbach. The town is the smallest city in North Rhine-Westphalia due to its population. Visitors will not be disappointed: With its quaint half-timbered houses and its idyllic location on the edge of the Eifel National Park, Heimbach provides the ideal starting point for excursions into nature. Before the hike, interested parties can obtain information about the National Park and regional hiking trails at the National Park Gateway. The interactive audio play through a forest labyrinth is also worth a visit.
The hiking trail starts at the "Parkplatz Über Rur". You will recognize the path by the marking "Art in the Bush". At the beginning, there is a slightly steeper ascent, but then the round proceeds flat and always on paved paths. Enjoy magnificent views over the Heimbach reservoir and Hengebach Castle, which inspire further exploration. The castle, which is one of the oldest buildings in the Eifel region, is definitely one of the highlights in the area. The impressive Art Nouveau-style hydroelectric power plant at the reservoir, which still produces electricity today, is also worth a visit.
